What is Sports Therapy?

Sports therapy is a small area of healthcare that focuses on the prevention of injury as well as the rehabilitation back to optimum levels of function and sport specific fitness.

Using the principles of sport and exercise science incorporating physiological and pathological processes to prepare the participant for training, competition and an active life.

Sports Therapists have a distinct scope of practice that we use our knowledge and skills to be able to help utilise sports and exercise principles to optimise performance and recovery.

We are able to provide the immediate care of injuries in a wide range of environments. As well as assess, treat and rehabilitate these injuries to return the client to their goal level of activity.

Providing soft tissue interventions when required is also a huge part of a sports therapist role in aiding rehabilitation and preventing injury occurrence. We also have the ability to plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation and return to training programs.

To be a member of The Society of Sports Therapist we have to prove we are competent in 5 key areas related to injury in sport.

  • Prevention.

  • Recognition & Evaluation.

  • Management, Treatment and Referral.

  • Rehabilitation.

  • Education & Professional Practice Issues.

This gives you the piece of mind that your therapist is up to date with the latest research and can therefore give you the best treatment options to help get you back to your best.
